Collecting and Using Your Personal Data
Types of Data Collected
Personal Data
While using Our Service, We may ask You to provide Us with certain personally identifiable information that can be used to contact or identify You. Personally identifiable information may include, but is not limited to:
- Email address
- First name and last name
- Usage Data
Usage Data
Usage Data is collected automatically when using the Service.
Usage Data may include information such as Your Device's Internet Protocol address (e.g. IP address), browser type, browser version, the pages of our Service that You visit, the time and date of Your visit, the time spent on those pages, unique device identifiers and other diagnostic data.
When You access the Service by or through a mobile device, We may collect certain information automatically, including, but not limited to, the type of mobile device You use, Your mobile device unique ID, the IP address of Your mobile device, Your mobile operating system, the type of mobile Internet browser You use, unique device identifiers and other diagnostic data.
We may also collect information that Your browser sends whenever You visit our Service or when You access the Service by or through a mobile device.
On this website We collect anonymous, cookieless usage statistics through PostHog, hosted in the European Union. No cookies or other identifiers are stored on Your device and page addresses are recorded without any room, voucher or share code in them.
In the Salsool app — in Your browser and in the mobile apps — the same analytics are not anonymous: once You are signed in, the named events We record are associated with Your account identifier, and the app stores that identifier on Your device so the events line up across a session. We record named events only, such as a room being created or a round finishing; there is no autocapture, no session recording and no screen recording. PostHog also derives an approximate location from the network address the events are sent from, which on the phone and in the browser is Yours. We do not use any of it for advertising and it is never combined with data from other companies for that purpose.
If You arrive through one of Our campaign links, such as a link in one of Our videos, the website keeps a short label naming that link for the length of the visit and passes it to the app when You open it. The app records the label with Your account identifier, so We can count which of Our posts lead to games. The label names Our link, never You. No advertising company's code runs on this website or in the mobile apps; the one exception, in the Salsool web app, is described next.
Advertising measurement in the Salsool web app (Middle East and North Africa only)
When You play in the Salsool web app (play.salsool.com) in the Middle East and North Africa region, We use the Meta Pixel and Meta's Conversions API to learn which of Our Instagram and Facebook ads lead to people playing, so those ads are shown to people likely to play. Three things are reported to Meta, and nothing else: that a player started their first game, that they finished their first game, and that a purchase was made in the web app, with its list price. With each report Meta receives Your device's network address and browser type, Meta's own browser identifiers (the _fbp and _fbc cookies the Meta Pixel keeps on play.salsool.com), and a one-way hash of Your Salsool account identifier. Never Your name, Your email address, a room code or anything You type. Meta Platforms Ireland Limited receives this as an independent controller under its own Privacy Policy. We do not use the Meta Pixel or the Conversions API on salsool.com, in the mobile apps, or for players in the EU region.
When the app first opens, We look up the country of its IP address in a copy of the IPinfo Lite database kept on Our own servers, to choose the region it starts in. The address is not sent to IPinfo, and neither the address nor the country is stored; only the region is kept. IP address data powered by IPinfo.

Your consent to this Privacy Policy followed by Your submission of such information represents Your agreement to that transfer.
The Company will take all steps reasonably necessary to ensure that Your data is treated securely and in accordance with this Privacy Policy and no transfer of Your Personal Data will take place to an organization or a country unless there are adequate controls in place including the security of Your data and other personal information.

In the EU region you must be 16 or over to use Salsool.
What we hold and why
- Account: your display name, an account identifier, the devices you sign in from, and, if you link Google or Apple, the name and email address they share. We use these to run your account and keep it secure. Legal basis: contract.
- Games: the rooms you host or join, the names and answers in them, scores, and your game history ("Your trail"). We need these to run the game. Legal basis: contract.
- Purchases: what you bought, when, and the provider's receipt. Legal basis: contract, and our legal obligation to keep sales records.
- Region: when the app first opens, we look up the country of your IP address on our own servers to choose your region. We keep only the region. Legal basis: legitimate interests (showing you the right language and content).
- Analytics and errors: named app events linked to your account identifier, and error reports. A question report includes the note you write. Legal basis: legitimate interests (keeping the game working and improving it).
- Safety: reports from other players, bans, and checks of names and typed answers for abuse. Legal basis: legitimate interests (keeping games safe).
- Push notifications: a push token, only if you allow notifications on your device. Legal basis: consent, which you can withdraw in your device settings at any time.
We do not sell your data, show advertising, or use any advertising or tracking SDK.
Who processes it for us
- netcup GmbH (Germany): hosting of our servers and database.
- DigitalOcean (data stored in Frankfurt): daily database backups.
- PostHog (EU): app analytics.
- Sentry: error reports.
- Expo (United States): push notifications and app updates.
- RevenueCat (United States): in-app purchase records, linked to your account identifier.
- OpenAI (United States): automated checks of display names and typed answers for abuse.
Paddle (web purchases, as merchant of record), Apple (App Store and Sign in with Apple) and Google (Google Play and Google sign-in) handle your data as independent controllers under their own privacy policies.
Transfers outside the EEA
Our servers and database are in Germany. Some providers above are based in the United States. Where your data reaches them, the transfer relies on the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses or the EU-US Data Privacy Framework, as set out in that provider's data processing terms.
How long we keep it
We keep account and game data for as long as your account exists. Deleting your account signs you out of every device at once. 30 days later (a guest account within the hour) your name, email address, sign-in and contact details are removed: your display name becomes "Deleted player", and your email, phone number, Google or Apple link, sign-in and notification tokens, and anything you typed into a report are cleared. Your games, scores, Trail progress, purchases (kept for as long as the law requires), device and sign-in records, reports and bans stay, without your name. Database backups are kept for 30 days.
Your rights
You have the right to:
- access your data and get a copy of it;
- have inaccurate data corrected;
- have your data erased;
- restrict how we use it;
- receive the data you gave us in a portable format;
- object to our use of it based on legitimate interests;
- withdraw consent at any time, without affecting what we did before.
To use any of these rights, email support@salsool.com from the address linked to your account, or include your display name and how you sign in. We reply within one month.
You also have the right to complain to a data protection supervisory authority, in particular in the EU country where you live, work, or where you think the problem happened.
